To Major or Minor?
The Computer Game Design program enables students to focus on the artistic components of computer game design while providing them with the technical skills prerequisite to the field. Students have the opportunity to earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Game Design or they can choose one of two Minors offered by the program.
BFA in Game Design
The BFA in Computer Game Design requires 120 credits and, as is true of all baccalaureate degrees at George Mason University, includes a significant component of general education courses. The curriculum is drawn from the following areas:
- computer science
- visual arts
- digital arts
- computer music, and
- a new gaming design area of study.
This degree prepares students for employment in the computer gaming design and development field, within the commercial and federal sectors. The program's mix of liberal arts and technology satisfies an industry which demands an academically rigorous technical expertise coupled with an understanding of the artistic and creative elements of the evolving medium. George Mason's proximity to the nation's capital and to some of the gaming industry's giants also provides students with opportunities to secure an internship while studying.
Students interested in the BFA in Computer Game Design should select Game Design as their major on their application.
Minor in Game Design
The minor (15-16 credits) embodies the core components discovered in the larger game design field. It offers a core of foundational studies with intermediate and advanced course options in Game Animation, Game Sound and Music, or Game Design and Development. Students pursuing the minor will also be able to participate in official game design program events and game design competitions.
Minor in Sport and Game Design
George Mason University students can pursue a minor in “Sport and Computer Game Design.” The minor provides a combined, introductory look at both the sports and computer game industries. It’s the first major or minor of its kind and brings together expert faculty from two of George Mason’s highly regarded programs. Register for classes or talk to an advisor to learn how you can distinguish yourself with this exciting, new, and interdisciplinary course of study.
